Frequently Asked Questions
What is the approximate pledge amount, and can it be made in advance?
As a nonprofit organization, we ask families to make a tax-deductible pledge or pre-pledge in support of the creation and placement of their loved one’s Memorial Marker. The suggested pledge amount varies depending on materials and logistics, but families are welcome to make this pledge in advance to help with planning and preparation.
Please contact us directly for the current suggested pledge amount and information on how to make your contribution.
Does the veteran need to have fallen in service to be eligible?
No. Veterans do not need to have fallen in service to be honored with a Memorial Marker on the Veterans Memorial Reef. We honor all U.S. military veterans who have completed their service with honor and wish to be remembered through this unique and lasting tribute.
Eligibility is based on proof of military service, typically verified through a DD-214 form. Our goal is to celebrate the legacy and sacrifice of all who served—whether they passed away during active duty, after retirement, or later in life.
Are ashes incorporated into the Memorial Markers?
Yes. The ashes are respectfully placed into a custom-designed aquatic urn, created in the colors of the veteran’s branch of service and affixed with a name plaque and branch of Service. This urn is then securely placed inside the Memorial Marker and encased in eco-friendly cement, ensuring it becomes a lasting part of the reef ecosystem while honoring the veteran’s legacy.
Is there a plaque placed on the Memorial Marker?
Yes. We use the official plaques provided to all service members by the Veterans Administration. We request a plaque for each Fallen Hero, and it is securely affixed to the eco-friendly Memorial Marker before the Day 1 memorialization ceremony.
Is it possible to include the veteran’s spouse in the same Memorial Marker?
Yes. Spouses may certainly be included alongside their loved ones on the reef. Each Memorial Marker is designed to accommodate two sets of cremains, allowing both to be honored together.
